Missouri Botanical Garden

Location: 4344 Shaw Blvd. St. Louis, MO 63110

St. Louis has some amazing holiday light shows. The light show depicted in this illustration, at the Missouri Botanical Garden, has the Climatron as its centerpiece. The Climatron was the first geodesic dome built as a conservatory. It showcases many tropical plant species in a half-acre space. It’s particularly nice to visit during the winter months, because its temperature is kept between 64 and 85 degrees.

Gateway Arch

Location: 11 North 4th St., St. Louis, MO 63102

The Gateway Arch is one of the most recognized monuments in the world. In 2018, the arch grounds were extended over the interstate, making St. Louis suddenly much more walkable. From the arch, you can safely access Busch Stadium, the world-famous City Museum, and historic Union Station on foot.

Art Hill in Forest Park

One of the most-visited attractions in St. Louis is Forest Park, home to the St. Louis Zoo, Steinberg Ice-skating Rink, three golf courses and two museums, including the St. Louis Art Museum, pictured here. In the winter, kids of all ages head to Art Hill for the best sledding in town.

Forest Park Boathouse

Location: 6101 Government Dr., St. Louis, MO  63110

Forest Park has some beautiful waterways, leading to the stately Grand Basin at the foot of Art Hill. You can rent paddle boats and rowboats at the Forest Park Boathouse and spend a day seeing the park from the water. Afterward, it’s dinner at the Boathouse. If you choose to dine al fresco, the resident ducks will always ask you for samples.

Jazz St. Louis

Saint Louis University neighbors the Grand Avenue Arts District where you will find Broadway plays, the world-famous St. Louis Symphony, and some of the best jazz you’re likely to hear anywhere. We’re very proud of our hometown jazz and rock heroes: Scott Joplin, Miles Davis, Chuck Berry, and Nelly.

Shakespeare in the Park

As if it weren’t enough to have so many cultural offerings — from museums to theater to a world-class zoo — in one city park, most Forest Park attractions are free to visit. For a full month each summer, crowds gather in Shakespeare Glen for professional live theater. Just pack a lawn blanket and a picnic dinner, and you’re good to go. In summer 2025, the show is Hamlet.

Pagoda Circle at the Muny in Forest Park

Location: 1 Theatre Dr, St. Louis, MO 63112

Speaking of theater, the Muny in Forest Park is the oldest and largest outdoor theatre in America with 11,000 seats. During the summer, you can see a different Broadway musical every week. Pagoda Circle with its beautiful gardens acts as the unofficial “front door” to the Muny.

McDonnell Planetarium at St. Louis Science Center

Location: 5050 Oakland Ave., St. Louis, MO  63110

Just a short bike ride from the Muny you’ll find St. Louis’s spaceship — otherwise known as McDonnell Planetarium. Built in 1963, the planetarium has one of the best star projectors in the world. In 1991, it was expanded as part of the St. Louis Science Center to include a 300,000 square-foot structure across Highway 40, accessible by an indoor walkway. Like most things in Forest Park, the Science Center is free to visit.

St. Louis Wheel at Union Station

Location: 201 S 18th St, St. Louis, MO 63103

For those new to St. Louis, Forest Park is 2.5 miles to the west along highway 40. Downtown is the roughly the same distance to the east. And SLU is right in the middle of it all! Union Station in the Downtown West area was once one of the busiest train stations in the world. Now it houses a premiere hotel, an aquarium, an indoor ropes course and a 200-foot-high Ferris wheel.

1904 World's Fair Zoo Flight Cage

Location: 1 Government Dr, St. Louis, MO 63110

The St. Louis Zoo might never have been built had it not been for the 1904 World’s Fair. It was for the fair that the flight cage was created by the Smithsonian Institution. After the fair, the cage was scheduled to be dismantled and shipped back to Washington D. C., but the people of St. louis were so smitten with it that they fought to keep it here. And the zoo grew up around it.

Katy Trail

Location: 240 mile trail in Missouri with 26 trail heads

People are surprised to learn that the city of St. Louis actually has a very small footprint, with the city-county line just seven miles from the Mississippi River. But both St. Louis city and St. Louis county offer numerous bike routes. The Katy Trail was the first rails-to-trails project in the U.S. and remains one of the longest at 240 miles. Extensions to the trail in recent years have connected St. Louis to Kansas City via well-maintained gravel — and level — bike and pedestrian paths.

City Foundry

The neighborhood around Saint Louis University has seen lots of development in the past decade, including City Foundry. The Food Hall at the Foundry boasts more than a dozen unique kitchens serving everything from poke to chicken to cheesecake. The Foundry also has retail shops, an upscale theatre and an indoor golf course just a half mile from campus.

Steinberg Ice Skating Rink

At the eastern-most edge of Forest Park you’ll find one of the largest outdoor ice-skating rink in the Midwest. If you’re beginning to wonder how all of these very big things fit into one  little park, it helps to know that Forest Park is nearly twice the size of Central Park in New York!

Gateway Arch at Night

The Gateway Arch got a lighting upgrade in 2023, which makes it even more striking by night than it is by day. When viewed from across the river, it is easy to see that the arch is, in fact, as wide as it is tall! St. Louisans have named June 3 "630 Day" in recognition of the arch’s singular dimension.

Piazza Imo in The Hill Neighborhood

Location: 2109 Marconi Ave, St. Louis, MO 63110

St. Louis is sometimes described as a city of neighborhoods with different cultural settlements dotting the metro area. The Hill neighborhood is St. Louis’s “Little Italy,” home to some of the best restaurants in town and to St. Ambrose Church. The Piazza Imo across from St. Ambrose was a community-driven project, reminiscent of the piazzas in Italy.

The Fabulous Fox

Location: 527 N Grand Blvd, St. Louis, MO 63103

The Fox Theatre is just a block away from Saint Louis University and is one of a handful of theaters built by William Fox in the 1920s. Fox’s wife, Eve Leo, was behind the opulent decor of the Fabulous Fox, including the golden lions with their blinking eyes and the custom carpet with elephants woven into its design. Ms. Leo died in 1962, but is still occasionally seen visiting the theatre as one of its resident ghosts.

Bevo Mill

Anheuser-Busch has been an anchor in the St. Louis business community for more than 170 years. In 1917, the family built Bevo Mill as a place to stop off for a cold beer on the way home from the brewery. Bevo has been used alternately as a restaurant and event space ever since.

The Jewel Box at Forest Park

Location: Intersection of Wells and McKinkey drives in Forest Park, St. Louis, MO 63110

The Jewel Box in Forest Park is an art deco greenhouse built in the 1930s when conservatories were all the rage. It remains a popular spot to this day for weddings and other events.

Orchid Show at Missouri Botanical Garden

The Missouri Botanical Garden makes life a little brighter each February with its annual orchid show. This show – and the garden behind it – have been educating St. Louis’s greenest thumbs for more than 170 years. The garden is home to the world’s largest collection of rare and endangered orchids.

St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station

The St. Louis Aquarium is but one of the new attractions at St. Louis Union Station. Exhibits there include an expansive shark habitat, two hands-on fish tanks, dramatic digital aquatic displays and a working underwater clock.

Paint Louis

St. Louis loves its art, including its graffiti art. Every year the city invites graffiti writers from around the world to paint the flood wall south of downtown. Originally dubbed “Mural Mile,” the wall has more than doubled in size since the project began in 1997. Paint Louis, as it is now called, takes place Labor Day weekend each year.
